Term/Definition

Fruit : Coconut

The dry fibrous fruit of the coconut palm. The white fleshy part of the coconut is edible and is used fresh or dried in cooking. The coconut is picked when it is green for its juice for a refreshing drink. When the fruit is ripe the juice is a lot bitterer and less pleasant to drink. The coconut is usually opened with a heavy knife or a meat cleaver. Alternatively the juice can be drained from the coconut. The drained coconut can then be baked 180 deg C for 20 minutes. This will cause the heat to crack the shell of the coconut and loosen the flesh at the same time.Coconut milk contains sugars, proteins, vitamins, minerals, fibres and antioxidants. The coconut is an exceptionally nutritional food source that provides excellent balanced mineralised levels. For this reason coconut water can be used as an intravenous fluid.
