A fruit with a thick reddish skin containing pulp and many edible seeds. The taste of the pomegranate varies from sweet, tangy to sour depending on the variety of the pomegranate and the state of ripeness. A ripe pomegranate should feel heavy for its size, have a distinctive dark colour and make a metallic sound when tapped. Pomegranates can be used as a topping for ice cream, mixed with yoghurt or used in jams. The seeds can be dried and used in chutneys, to produce curries or simply served raw in salads. The fruit and juice adds a delightful splash of colour to beverages, smoothies and other recipes. Pomegranates are a rich source of folic acid, antioxidants, potassium and vitamins A, C and E. They assist in lowering blood pressure and maintain a healthy heart.Pomegranates are used widely in Iranian, Indian, Persian, Greek and Turkish cuisine. The juice is a popular drink in the Middle East.
